Native Americans inhabited Carroll County for thousands of years. Home to numerous archaeological sites, many artifacts have been located across the county. They used the land for settlements, seasonal visits, journeys and hunting grounds.

The predominant Native Americas at the time of colonization, were the Susquehannock and Lenape tribes. Many of the ancient trails used by the Algonquian and Iroquois nations, were built on top of and transformed into roads, such as Maryland Route 26 (Liberty Road) which was transformed and renamed Liberty by act of the Maryland General Assembly in the early 1800’s.

The Sykesville land was used by the Susquehannock and the Lenape as hunting ground. Taneytown, was inhabited by the Tuscarora during the early to mid 1700’s.

In 1837, Carroll County was formed from Baltimore and Frederick Counties via Constitutional Amendment which passed January 19, 1837. Carroll County derived its name from Charles Carroll or Carrollton, a Revolutionary War statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The earliest European settlers were predominantly Pennsylvania Dutch from South East PA and English from the Tidewater region of Maryland. German was the predominant language of Carroll County until the Civil was.

Westminster is the county seat, and according to the 2010 census, has a population of 167,134.

The county is bounded to the North by Pennsylvania, East by Baltimore county, south by Howard County and the west by Frederick County.
