Frederick County was formed in 1748 from Baltimore and Price Geroge’s counties, under the Acts of 1748. Named after Frederick Calvert, 6th and last Lord Baltimore, who was the Proprietor of Maryland from 1751 until his death in 1771.

Folling Independence in 1776, Federick County was divided into 3 parts; to the west became Washington County, the southernmost portion became Montgomery County and remaining stayed Federick County.

In 1837 a part of Frederick county was combined with a portion of Baltimore County to become Carroll County, which today is east of Frederick County.

Frederick County is South of Pennsylvania, East of Carroll and Howard Counties, south of Motgomery County and the Potomac River, and west by Washington County. The county seat is Frederick.

Frederick County is between the Piedmonth Plateau Reagion and the Appalachian Mountains. Two prominent ranges include Catoctin Moutain and South Mountain, which form an extension the the Blue Ridge. The Middletown Valley lies between.
